From 27 Years to a Second Chance

The story of SDB Cleaning and Trash Removal begins long before the first contract was signed or the first facility was cleaned. It begins on August 20, 1992—the day Sean Damone Benson was sentenced to Life in prison.

For nearly three decades, that date represented loss, separation, and a life put on hold. But on August 20, 2019, everything changed. After 27 years of incarceration, Sean walked out with a determination to prove that your past doesn't define your future—it prepares you for it.

The Road to Redemption

Re-entry wasn't easy. Two major surgeries. Learning to navigate a world that had moved on without him. Figuring out how to rebuild from nothing. But Sean had spent those years inside learning facility management, developing discipline, and preparing for the moment when he could turn his experience into impact.

On August 12, 2023—one days before the 31st anniversary of his sentencing—Sean attended the Dream of Detroit Street Fair. There, he met representatives from ProsperUs Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to helping entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses. It felt like destiny.

In September 2023, Sean enrolled in ProsperUs's Entrepreneur Training Program. By December 2023, he graduated with more than a certificate—he had a business plan, financial literacy, and a community of support. SDB Cleaning and Trash Removal LLC was officially born.

Turning Pain into Purpose

On August 20, 2025—exactly 33 years after that life-altering sentencing—Sean secured a $47,291 business loan** from ProsperUs Detroit. What was once a day of loss became the day he secured his company's future. The date that once represented the worst moment of his life now symbolizes resilience, redemption, and the power of second chances.

Today, SDB Cleaning maintains over 30,000 square feet of facility space across Detroit, serving vital community organizations like Eastside Community Network and multiple Brother II Brother Assisted Living residences. We don't just clean buildings—we create environments where communities can thrive.

Having spent nearly three decades behind bars, Sean knows firsthand the barriers returning citizens face when trying to rebuild their lives. Employers won't hire you. Banks won't trust you. Society tells you that you've already had your chance.

While our current workforce focuses on returning citizens, our five-year vision includes creating a dedicated pathway for Detroit's youth. We believe that early intervention—providing mentorship, job training, and real-world work experience—can prevent young people from ever facing the challenges that returning citizens must overcome.

Though we haven't yet brought youth into our program, it remains a core pillar of our growth strategy. We're building the infrastructure, refining our training processes, and preparing to offer Detroit's next generation the support they need to succeed early on.
